AI search means answers written by an assistant, usually with a few sources linked. GEO is the work of making your pages the ones it can find, understand and quote. It is new, it moves quickly, and much advice about it is guesswork. We separate what is documented from what is not.
What is documented?
- Be indexed. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode use the normal Google index. Google says there are no extra requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to show a snippet. ChatGPT search is reported to draw partly on Bing’s index, and Perplexity has its own crawler. So normal indexing in Google and Bing comes first.
- Allow the crawlers. Do not block the search crawlers of the assistants in
robots.txt. Whether to allow training crawlers is a business choice, and we explain the trade-off. Our own robots.txt allows all. - Structured data helps Google understand a page. No AI company has said that it guarantees a citation.
What is best practice, not a rule?
These are consistent with how assistants quote pages, but nobody has published proof.
- A clear entity: one name everywhere, an About page with facts, and matching profiles.
- Answer-first pages, with short paragraphs, one claim per sentence, honest dates and tables.
- Original numbers that others can cite, with their source.
- Mentions on sites that assistants lean on, such as directories and forums. Real ones only.
What is guesswork?
llms.txt is the clearest example. We publish one because it costs almost nothing, and we do not count on it. Be wary of anyone selling ‘AI-friendly’ hidden text, prompt stuffing or content served differently to bots. We do none of that.
How do we measure citations?
AI answers do not appear in any report from Google or OpenAI that says ‘you were cited’. So we build our own.
- A monthly panel. About 30 fixed questions, half in Greek and half in English, asked in ChatGPT with search on, Perplexity, Gemini and Google. We log the date, the assistant, whether you were mentioned, which URL was cited and which competitors appeared.
- Referrals. Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com. Many AI visits arrive without a referrer, so this is a minimum.
- Crawler logs. Requests from the assistants’ crawlers. If a crawler never visits, access is fixed first.
- Bing Webmaster Tools and Search Console, for what first-party data they do show.
The first run is a baseline. After that we look at trends, because the same question can produce different answers on different days.
Is there a Greek angle?
Yes. Very few good Greek pages explain GEO, so a clear Greek page has a real chance to be the one an assistant finds. The English terms (GEO, AEO, llms.txt) are used in Greek search with almost no Greek explanation. We write for Greek businesses in Greek, and test your questions in Greek as well as English.
Where does this fit?
GEO sits on top of technical work. See SEO and AI search for the whole picture, or how we build prerendered websites. We have no case study with citation results to show yet. If you want to talk, contact us.
